Dr. Falko Schmidt

Active Matter and Fluids Research

Long Night of Sciences in Leipzig

Public talk on Active Matter by Falko Schmidt & Frank Cichos

June 20, 2025

The long night of sciences (German: Lange Nacht Der Wissenschaften) enables insights into current research topics at the University of Leipzig, including the SoftMatter Division at the Department of Physics and Earth Sciences.

Falko Schmidt and Frank Cichos will introduce the general public to miniaturises robots and how manipulate them on small scales.

Time: 20/06/2025 19:45-20:15
Place: Theoretical Lecture Hall, Linnéstr. 5, 04129 Leipzig

Will swarms of microrobots conquer the world in the future?
Nature offers fascinating examples of swarm behavior — from herds of animals and flocks of birds to bacterial colonies, in which self-propelled components coordinate over long distances.
Is it feasible to artificially create self-driving building blocks at the scale of bacteria? How do such micromotors work? Can entire swarms of motors coordinate and take on tasks for us?
This lecture provides insights into the research field of active matter, which unites physics, biology, and engineering sciences.
